After I have paid through PayPal, I get an email asking me to activate my account. Why?

PayPal is nothing if not security conscious. This email asks you to click on a link to confirm your email address which is a way of verifying that you are the person making the transaction, not someone impersonating you from another computer. However, please be aware that you need go no further than this. Paypal would like you to take up further options - to sign up for "Expanded use" for example - but this isn't necessary unless you're intending to become a PayPal "Power User".
